Notes for the Working Group on Disaster Risk Reduction's Seminar at the 3rd World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction

The Working Group on Disaster Risk Reduction successfully convened a seminar on 16 March 2015 at the 3rd World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction held in Sendai, Japan on 14-18 March 2015. With the title 'Learning Disasters From Past Disasters-Typhoon Committee Forging the Way,' the seminar attempted to review the WGDRR's achievements in the last ten years and identify the challenges and gaps, thereby setting the new visions and goals for the future.

The welcome addresses were delivered by Dr. Jinyoung Kim on behalf of the Chair of the WGDRR, and Mr. Puji Pujiono on behalf of UNESCAP. Then the WGDRR's commitment, its past activities and the lessons learned from past were presented by Dr. Yuichi Ono(Tohoku University), Dr. Chihun Lee(NDMI), and Dr. Vicente B. Malano(PAGASA, the Philippines). The discussion was followed with participation from the floor. During the discussion, the WGDRR's efforts in reducing disaster risk were acknowledged. However, a gap between scientists and policy makers was highlighted and further efforts to reduce the gap were recommended. In this regard, the importance of generating data to be easily understood to the policy makers and the public was shared. There were around 20 participants from Japan, the Republic of Korea, the Republic of the Philippines, and international organizations.
